Equine Ailments - A to Z
Locking Patella - the locking of the hind leg, often affects both legs, caused through the stay mechanism that allows horses to doze while standing seizing up. The hind leg locks briefly when extended, sometimes with repeated catching when walking. The horse may drag the leg at the beginning of exercise. It may be caused by poor conformation and be inherited. It is a condition that often affects horses in poor health with lack of muscular fitness and disappears when they regain health. Surgery is sometimes required. |
